Coastal Decor: How to add the Unexpected
Add Some Animal Print to Your Coastal Decor.
Woven natural materials are the best way to harmonize nature with the decorating. (Animal Prints are also mother natures creation but not usually associated with coastal decor.) So what’s predictable in coastal decor? Blue and white and natural materials and there’s nothin’ wrong with that. No need to reinvent the wheel. 😉 I love neutrals, as you may recall from this post about my Mid Mod Den Update in Atlanta. At the beach, I’ve enjoyed stepping outside my box into coastal decor by using shades of blue to redecorate a sentimental room with a view. This has been a fun challenge for me over the past couple weeks. Mom had already chosen the soft grey-blue for the walls. The blue and white gingham bedskirt was Gigi’s (my grandmother), so voilà! Blue and white it is. Also sharing a new fav place to find designer dups for pillows, so keep scrolling.
They say blue and white always works well for coastal decor. A range of blue tones that compliment the water and sky feels cohesive. Popping in warm wood with white and other natural materials such as jute details and rope trim adds balance and texture. For many reasons, this is my new favorite room. So, what’s the unexpected color pop? Keep reading and scrolling. If you haven’t guessed already 😉
If there ever was a “room with a view” it’s this one. I have tried to show you just how pretty this view is, but the picture above doesn’t begin to do it justice. For me, the attachment to this room is also sentimental. My grandmother lived her summers just one floor below this exact spot for most of her life.
Last year my parents leveled the old cottage and built a new beach house. My parents love architecture. The external structure is a unique blend of a Charleston single house and low country coastal cottage with wrap-around porches.
My parents are also sentimental and are of the generation that believes in passing down furniture for future generations. Although I do love the pieces from my grandparent’s cottage and Gigi’s great style, I’m dying to build on what my parents currently have. In other words, I’m dying to modernize it. This past month I got my toes wet trying to ease them into the wonderful world of online shopping.
The Details of the Mix
The bed, art, lighting, and vintage birds are all from the old cottage.
What’s New:
Bedding, pillows, throw blankets, this amazing floor mirror, storage baskets, and rugs.
Balance is a goal we seek in many aspects of our lives. Decorating is no exception. Balancing out this room with designer copies of Scalamandre le Tigre pillows and Anthropologie blankets.
So, Whats the unexpected color pop? If you haven’t guessed it’s the animal print pillow. Not your typical coastal detail but I’m loving its contrast with the blue and white block print.
The Best place to find Designer DUPS
If you’re like me and love Scalamandre tiger but don’t want to pay over $1000/yard for fabric then this a beautiful alternative.
Le tigre pillows can be found on Etsy. Click here.
I’m also experimenting with layering the circle rug.
I love to have a little boho style, so bringing in the textured throw blankets and layering the rugs just feels right.
There are also 2 fringe blankets: one on the foot of the bed and the other draped over the old English chair. See Above.
Happy first day of summer! Thanks so much for visiting 😉 Whats your favorite decorating style?
I love so many it’s hard to choose.

Jean, I love how you’ve touched up the downstairs. I have to say, though, I wasn’t too sure about all this when you first got started. You know how your father and I are funny about our stuff’s being moved around. But as you so often do, you bring me around to your artistic vision. You never disappoint. I’m so proud of you. Love, Mama.

It is refreshing to see the blending of old and new elements, coastal decor in a new beach cottage that already blends much of the old. I love how you’ve managed to make all this work. I have to admit that if you’d told me in the beginning that you were thinking about putting some kind of tiger or leopard patterned pillow in the downstairs bedroom, I probably wouldn’t have jumped immediately on board. Very nice work, Jean.

It does feel like you’re in the next, happier life when you wake up, turn to your left and see a blue sky over a blue ocean. Not to rub in in…;)

I’m kinda with your parents, I love the old antique furniture that’s been passed down. Our home is full of items mostly passed down because they have meaning and we try not to have too much clutter. Oh and that beach view is beautiful!!

They’ll appreciate that, Ashley. Thank you! 🙂
