Key Elements for a Mid Mod Den Update

midcentury modern den update

Hi everyone, I’ve been at it on the redecorating front, again–Midcentury Modern (AKA “mid mod”) for the den. I want to share my latest update and what I consider to be the key elements or details that make this space feel both mid mod and cozy.

My goal is to stick to a design theme. It’s hard because I love so many different styles. However, I’m always attracted to light bright interiors. Whether it’s mid mod, transitional,  modern farmhouse or traditional as long as it’s light and bright it works for me.

The details are key elements

I recently added new rugs and pillows and a spine bookcase to balance out the vintage brass lighting and vintage sculpture. The key elements that make this room Mid Mod are the Sputnik lighting, opp art, spine bookcase, light chaser rug and pillows.

This rug—oh, I LOVE IT—replaced what had been a traditional antique rug that while beautiful, also had deep, dark colors.  It took me the longest time to realize how much these colors could affect the entire mood of the room. Click here to see what I’m talking about.

So the rug is awesome. It helps both the acoustic & overall aesthetic of the room.  However, its one drawback is that it sheds like crazy in its early stages. The good news is that the shedding lets up after about a month.

DETAILS

The Record Player

This vintage-looking Crosby record player from Urban Outfitters has one modern twist: blue-tooth compatibility.  Otherwise, it’s a throwback to the good ole’ vinyl days.

The Spine Bookcase

The spine bookcase is not only a cool design but also really practical and space-efficient, especially for storing books that are mainly decorative.

The doggie ladder

Vintage Aztec Rug to the Rescue
This is Maximus. He loves to have his picture taken! Unfortunately, he also has had chronic hip trouble. So I bought him a doggie ladder to ensure he’s not deprived of any couch time.  However, the doggie ladder by itself is a total eyesore.  Its off-white-looking foam did not mesh with the color scheme in this room. I had to think of something. My solution, for now, is to cover it with my vintage Aztec rug.

TAKE AWAYS

Vintage brass…a little bit goes a long way  😉

Is brass neutral? I find that too much can be overpowering. You see several pieces of brass in this picture in the kitchen and den. And before it’s all over, I may shed more brass. Needless to say, a little brass goes a long way.

Pillows & Blankets

I’m addicted to pillows and blankets.

The pillows and blankets I’ve added in the past several months all have two things in common.  They are casual, and they add to my light and bright aesthetic. Check out these pillows from a target. Everything else is also linked below. Also obsessed with THIS cashmere pillow by UGG.
