Photography Art: It’s Cool to be Square
Thoughts for the day: If I don’t try, NOTHING ever changes & Don’t take myself too seriously.
Hi, I wanted to share my current favorite version of our entryway. Also sharing my epiphany for decorating with photography, as well as 3 versions of this space & the big lessons learned. Or should I say my woulda coulda shoulda?
Entryway Decorating: Learn From My Mistakes
I’ve tried this entryway with too much brass {cringe} and a little too cottage country, and now this way. Lots of white. We’re finally getting our floors redone. YAY! So, I shot these pictures before we left. Say Bye Bye to the awful orange floors 🙂 Can’t wait to get home and see the new ones…
Photography Art – It’s Cool to be Square.
The 2 most versatile art pieces that are my photographs are both squares. They both look great in a variety of locations. I believe it’s because they’re square and black and white. This picture I took of a model years ago. The square shape makes it easy to incorporate it in a variety of locations. She started out in my studio but I also like her over the fireplace and now at the front door. My other piece was during my abstract phase. It’s mixed media and looks totally different. However, it’s a smaller square and still black and white.
So I’m thinking there’s a pattern here for versatile decorating with photography.
- Keep it square
- Stay black and white
Here’s what I learned.
- Chill out with the brass. It’s like red lipstick – a little red goes a long way. Looking at this now, what jumps out to me is just how important hardware is in decorating. I was really into brass as you’ll see below.
- Curvy furniture and lighting need more room than squares and straight lines. The curves seem to take up more visual space. Keep this in mind for small spaces.
- Square-shaped photography is my absolute new favorite thing! It’s versatile when decorating and plays tribute to vintage photography. Think of Instagram, where its cool to be square 😉
Are you ready for all the brass? eeek… This was from one of my first ever blog post in 2016. (The post was lost when I switched my site over.) I now believe it looks very 2016. 😉 Looking back, metallics in fashion and brass in decorating were huge that year. Thank goodness I can edit and relocate or resale if I can’t find a good spot. I still like these vintage pieces. I just styled them with “too many starlets in the space.”
If you want to see my cottage country version, check out this post from the holidays.
Thanks for viewing! I love meeting new people that share similar interest. Tell me what your best lessons are in the decorating world that perhaps you learned from trial and error.
